"A day in the life" update: As of today, we are pigless pig farmers on the home farm. We finished selling the finishers on the home place this morning before the winter storm/blizzard took hold.

One advantage of knowing a blizzard is approaching is we can prepare. Well, at least try. Everyone has been busy blizzard preparing for a few days. The feeders are full, we have plenty of feed ingredients on hand, the snow blower is in place and hooked up to the tractor, and heating fuel tanks have adequate levels. Oh, and yes, I have plenty of milk and bread on hand!

But even though many are home watching the storm, we still need to work. You can see in the video the wind isn't making transporting the piece of plywood very easy. The plywood is used as "winter boards" that are used to cover the ventilation fans. These will be in place until the new pigs arrive. One negative of having empty barns is we don't benefit from the pig's body temperatures to help keep the barns warm. What does that mean? Our barns will be using a lot more LP gas until the new piglets arrive next week. And once they arrive, we need to keep the barns warmer than when they are older.
